A little over a year ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Drew Mayville, Master Blender and Director of Quality at Buffalo Trace Distillery, during a tasting we organized alongside Sazerac, BLN, and Whisky México. It was an enriching experience that opened a window into the world of bourbon—a category still relatively unknown in our country.
That session was not only a lesson in distillation, but a revelation for the palate. Since then, Eagle Rare 10 Years has remained present in my tasting notes—a standout expression from Buffalo Trace that is, fortunately, beginning to find its way into our market.
To speak of Eagle Rare is to speak of Buffalo Trace Distillery—the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States.
Even during Prohibition in the United States, it remained active, one of only six distilleries granted a medicinal license. In a time when alcohol was outlawed, bourbon quietly survived behind pharmacy counters, prescribed rather than poured.
Today, the distillery spans more than 400 acres—a living architectural timeline across centuries. In 2013, it was designated a National Historic Landmark, a distinction so rare it shares symbolic ground with icons like the Empire State Building and the White House.
The Origin
Eagle Rare was created in 1975 by Charles L. Beam, grandnephew of Jim Beam, as a strategic response to a changing market. A battle cry in a decade when vodka and other clear spirits were gaining ground. Bourbon needed to reassert itself.
Eagle Rare entered the market with a clear objective: to dethrone Wild Turkey, one of the few bourbon brands holding strong. The symbolism was deliberate. If a wild turkey represented bourbon, Seagram’s chose the bald eagle—a more imposing, more patriotic emblem. The name “Rare” reinforced a sense of scarcity and prestige.
To win the battle, Eagle rare was presented at at 101 proof (50.5% ABV), matching the strength of its rival, and with a 10-year age statement—surpassing the 8 years commonly associated with competitors. It was designed to appeal not just emotionally, but rationally, to enthusiasts.
In 1989 the brand was acquired by Sazerac Company. Then after a brief period with Heaven Hill Distillery, production was moved to Buffalo Trace in 1992. By 2005, in response to evolving consumer preferences, the alcohol content was reduced to 90 proof (45% ABV), offering a more approachable profile to a wider audience
Then, in 2012, the "Single Barrel" designation was removed. This was not merely a branding change, but a technical acknowledgment: In the automated bottling line, transitions between barrels can introduce slight mixing of whisky.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Sweet and spiced at first impression: caramel, toffee, orange peel, leather, and toasted oak.
Palate: Intense on entry, slightly alcoholic, then drying. Notes of almond, vanilla, toasted cocoa, and caramel emerge.
Aftertaste: Medium to long. Dry, spiced, with occasional hints of leather.
A Curious Detail: Eagle Rare shares the famous distillery’s Mash Bill #1, known for its low rye content—estimated at less than 10%, though exact proportions remain undisclosed. (Aproximatelly 75% Corn, 10% Rye and 15% Malted Barley).
What's fascinating about Mash Bill #1 is that it shares the same "DNA" as several of the distillery's most coveted brands (Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor, and George T. Stagg). The only difference between them lies in their aging process (years and storage location).
