As we mentioned in our review of Kavalan Distillery Select No. 2, the company's intention was to create a range of easy-drinking whiskeys for beginners and with cocktail-friendly profiles that would satisfy both beginners and connoisseurs.

The official description of this whisky, created by Master Blender Ian Chang, is: "This is a single malt whisky created to showcase the artistry and innovation of the exceptional cask selection from Taiwan's premier distillery. This expression exquisitely highlights the aroma of Kavalan's unique tropical fruits and delivers a whisky with a sweet and warm flavor."

Tasting Notes

Nose: Sweet and quite fruity (green apple, peach), with fragant notes and a slight hint of straw that gradually reveals itself.

Taste: Sweet, resinous and oaky, sherry (fig, slighty tannic) with a hint of vanilla. The fruity note confirms the green apple on the nose.

Aftertaste: Short, alcoholic, sweet and spicy

As an interestic fact, the process for creating the Distillery Select range involves reclaiming various staves previously used at the distillery for other expressions. At Kavalan, the barrels are used up to a second fill, then dismantled, and the staves, in suitable condition, are recovered to form a new barrel. This “new” barrel of various recycled staves is what stores the whisky for Distillery Select expressions; the combination of staves influences the whisky’s profile.
