The island of Orkney is a place unlike any other in Scotland. If Scotland itself feels like entering another realm, Orkney is akin to arriving at the Mountains of Angmar in Middle-earth or Winterfell in Westeros. With the wind howling through the winding alleys and sloping paths leading to the various buildings, Highland Park is no exception. As its name suggests, the distillery sits atop the hill of Kirkwall, appearing from a distance to rise directly from the rock with its dark quarry construction.
Highland Park, like most distilleries, sources the majority of its malt from specialized companies, while a small amount is malted on site, one batch with peat from Hobbister Moor, another with coke. During their process, they emphasize a long fermentation and a slow distillation that encourages the concentration of a good amount of esters. The result is a whisky where sometimes the peat has the upper hand and at other times the sweetness or citrus fruits, a distinction that it maintains in most of its expressions.
Tasting Notes Nose: Sweet smoke, ripe fruit and dried flowers.
Palate: Creamy, fruity with citrus notes. Cinnamon and allspice. As well as a note that reminded me of a espresso cortado.
Finish: Long, sweet and slightly spicy
By the way, Highland Park 18 Year Old, originally launched in 1997, underwent a redesign in 2017. Now adorned with an engraved livery inspired by the Urnes Stave Church and the name ‘Viking Pride,’ it carries a rich history with a fresh look.
