On the west coast of the Isle of Arran lies Machrie Moor, a windswept and mystical place. Steeped in history, it's home to over 11 archaeological sites dating from the Neolithic (10000 BC - 2200 BC) and Bronze Age (3300 BC - 1200 BC). The peat from these ancient bogs was even used by the Arran distillery to craft this special expression.

Among the most significant monuments are the stone circles, once used by the farmers who lived here for religious and ceremonial purposes. Perhaps the best-known circle is the so-called "Fingal's Cauldron Seat." Its name references Fingal, a legendary figure from Scottish epic poetry. Inspired by the real Irish hero Finn MacCool, the poet James Macpherson (1736-96) transformed him into a giant who battled invaders from both Scandinavia and Rome.

Legend tells a fantastical tale about Fingal. It claims that the stone with a carved hole was where this mighty warrior tethered his loyal dog Bran while he feasted within the inner circle. Bran, the very same dog depicted on the bottle of Machrie Moor, faithfully accompanied Fingal on his adventures. This peaty single malt from Arran captures not only the rugged beauty of the landscape but also the echoes of ancient legends.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Soft and slightly salty, herbaceous smoke that reminds us of lemon leaf, citrus and fruity green apple. The presence of malt is constant.

Palate: We practically confirmed the nose. At the beginning we have a spicy sensation that fades and the vanilla notes stand out with a slightly fruity character.

Finish: It is medium, slightly spicy and fresh, the presence of smoke remains

I found this whisky to be interesting because it retains the fresh profile of the Arran distillery with a hint of peat, 20ppm. Personally, I find it similar to a Caol Ila. Incidentally, since 2019 the distillery has stopped producing peated whisky, and all peated whisky production is now carried out at the sister distillery of Lagg to the south of the island.
