When distilleries make changes, us consumers tend to brace ourselves for the worst. It's a thought that's often justified and adds to the nostalgia for the old editions that are no longer around. However, there are times when distilleries really nail it with their whiskey during a rebranding.

In 2019, Balblair introduced its new core range featuring age statements of 12, 15, 18, and 25 years, waving goodbye to the vintage editions they'd been putting out from 2008 to 2018. They streamlined their products and noticeable change in their complexity, resulting in a wider fan base and some serious accolades in international competitions

The change is crystal clear when comparing the Balblair 1989 Vintage with the profile of this whisky.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Honey, not overly sweet,  a hint of spice like ginger, raisins, cinnamon, and freshly baked bread, whether it's got nuts or apples.

Palate: Smooth as velvet, dark chocolate, starts off sweet and finishes dry, with a touch of fruit, nuts, and a hint of citrus.

Finish: Medium, evolving from creamy to dry.

I previously mentioned John MacDonald, the manager of Balblair Distillery, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in 2023. John breaks down this whiskey like this: "Tropical and mature, with the texture of melted chocolate and one of the best finishes a single malt whisky can offer. This impressive Balblair invites silent admiration. Round and velvety, yet developed and fresh. Softened by time but with the pulsating heart of the Highlands."
